I take approximately 50 digital images – including every joint on every limb from all four views, neck, back, shoulders, stifles, hocks, hamstrings, bottoms of the hooves – everything. These images are taken from 3-5 feet away from your horse. This is completely non-contact. If there is inflammation, the camera shows it. If there is nerve impingement, the camera shows it. The FLIR T-300 infrared camera detects temperature differences of one tenth of one degree Fahrenheit.
I will also tell you what “normal” and “not normal” thermal patterns are for the horse.
Also included is a consultation about the sustainability of your horse’s exercise program, based on the infrared images of tendons & ligaments.
If your horse’s exercise program was not sustainable, would you want to know?
I have been studying equine anatomy and equine exercise physiology since 2002. I also have been trained in saddle fitting by Kerry Ridgway DVM of South Carolina. Saddle fitting is very important to me, and I address it with every horse – if the back or withers are sore, we look at the saddle.
Especially satisfying for me is the case of the mystery lameness. These images can be e-mailed to the owner and the vet, which assists the vet in determining where to take x-rays or ultrasound images so that a diagnosis can be achieved.
I never diagnose – I wouldn’t dream of it. Our vets have a challenge every time we present an injured horse to them. They are trained for this, and no one else should ever attempt it. Thermography is a valuable discovery tool in the process. It answers the “where” questions.
